Revolving goat scheme
A major source of support for the gogos (grandmothers) groups is FOCHTA’s revolving goat scheme. Goats, which can be sold for a good price, are a valuable resource in Malawi. FOCHTA has a pool of over 120 goats, from which it lends nanny goats to the neediest of the grannies. Each woman cares for her goat for a period of time and is allowed to keep all the kids that are born while it is in her care, eventually returning the nanny goat to the central pool. The goal is for each granny to establish a herd of her own, which will provide a sustainable source of income as she continues to sell the young kids.
