Many thanks to Ruth Weissenberg for tutoring FOCHTA student beneficiaries
FOCHTA sincerely thanks Ruth Weissenberg for assisting its student beneficiaries in mathematics in two secondary schools.
During her stay from Oct 2011 to Feb 2012, she taught 100 students from Mikombe School and 83 students from Luchenza School within the school term as well as during weekends and school holidays. Some students from Chikolombe CDSS also attended the tutorial sessions.
Almost universally, mathematics is assumed to be one of the difficult science subjects in secondary schools. This challenge has not spared FOCHTA students as most of them obtain lower grades in them. The problem is more severe for girls than boys.
However, as one way of contributing to FOCHTA’s aim of promoting the welfare and literacy standard of orphans and other vulnerable children through education in Malawi, Ms Weissenberg volunteered to teach mathematics to FOCHTA students and a number of non-beneficiaries.
Her voluntary teaching work has immensely improved the students’ understanding in mathematics. FOCHTA hopes that more teacher volunteers will assist the students.

Well, I am writing this report just to thank Ruth for the things that she is doing to us/me. The one more thing that I thank for is about helping us to solve mathematical problems and now this is certainly a topic that I have got with perfectly which is Exponential Logarithms. Now I am able to solve each and every part, so I am thanking very much to FOCHTA to send Ruth to help us in solving mathematics.
Comment from : Evelyn Chipungu, a Form 3 student from Mikombe CDSS
When I was learning maths I was unable to solve well, but by this time now, it happens that I know to solve Logarithms. This now is a topic I do well to solve, work easier, and I thank FOCHTA for this programme as it will help me to pass examination.
FOCHTA therefore, conveys its gratitude to Ms Weissenberg for her commitment in assisting FOCHTA student beneficiaries. We also hope to welcome more teaching volunteers to come in the foreseeable future.
